That's right, no rain this week in Sevilla!!!!!!! FINALLY!
Being stuck inside all the time has been quite discouraging, so this sunshiney weekend was very exciting for me (and everyone else in Spain, basically)! I went out and walked around the town and took pictures and I didn't have to carry my umbrella or come home because it was raining and sit in my bunkbed and watch illegal movies/tv shows while listening to my host mom yell at the dog! BEST WEEKEND EVER :)
On Wednesday, we went on a group excursion to La Giralda, which is located a convenient 20 minute walk from my apartment. It is the largest gothic cathedral and the 3rd largest Christian cathedral in the world. There used to be a giant mosque here, but the Christians knocked it down to build the cathedral. A very important person is buried in La Giralda...I'll give you a hint: he is probably the most famous Spaniard of all time (I said HE, so it can't be Shakira, plus she is not dead, just fyi.)
This is terrible, but I have come to take La Giralda for granted. I walk passed it all the time, I go out to bars that are next to it, I get gelato at shops that are literally 2 steps away from it..so I forgot to take pictures of the outside! Oops. Luckily, I have a few from the first days I was in Sevilla:
La Giralda is huge, kind of empty, and very dark. There are a few electric lights, but most of the light is from the windows. The walls and ceiling are dark grey, so its a bit gloomy in there. It was still neat, and the gothic-style ceiling was amazing
This is where Columbus's son is buried! I stepped on him a little bit! (on purpose...I couldn't resist)
Get ready...this is where Columbus is buried! ¡Hola Cristóbol Colón! Oh Chris, how Spain adores you. We all think you are the bomb over here.
When I say Columbus (or Cristóbol Colón...because, again, I like to be fancy) is buried here, what I mean is that part of Cristóbol Colón is buried here. He was originally buried in the Dominican Republic, then moved to Cuba, and then moved to La Giralda. It took hundreds of years, an earthquake, and multiple boat rides for his remains to end up in this cathedral. Then, the Domincan Republic and Cuba both claim to have sent a random body, and that they kept Chris in their country. Sevilla did a DNA test and determined that the remains that they have are indeed those of Chris. Cuba and the D.R. refuse to do this...so basically Spain wins.
This is his tomb! Creepy.
We then climbed 35 STORIES up to the top of La Giralda. Fortunately, there weren't stairs, just stone ramps, so it wasn't too terrible.
On Thursday, my lit teacher took my class to the Museo de Bellos Artes for the Murillo Exhibit. We checked out lots of paintings by Murillo, go figure. And guess what...I actually really enjoyed it! It was fun seeing tons of paintings done by the same person. I like Murillo's style, and he even did a painting based on the 30 page story written in Old Spanish that I am currently fighting my way through. It is making my brain hurt.
Anyways..the museum:
We pass this random lump of street all of the time... but today it was covered in tiny wooden robots. I have no idea what was going on, but I kind of love it.
I went to a futbol game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hooraaaaay!!!!
My roomie and I just recently (as in 48 hours ago) met the people who live below us in our apartment building. They just so happen to be study abroad students from the good old US of A! So fun. We still don't know how we have been neighbors for 2 1/2 months and are just now meeting...but at least we are friends now! Anyways, we went to the game with our neighbor and some of his friends...yay new people!
The game was Sevilla vs. Deportivo...and it was a tie!! Booo!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate ties, I wanted there to be a shootout, but apparently I am not the boss of the Spanish Football Club. Bummer.
When Sevilla scored, men were hugging each other, people were jumping around and screaming and everyone was going CRAZY! The mood and energy of the whole stadium was hilarious/awesome.
The final score:

I had a blast at the game...soccer is so fun to watch! The control that the players had over their movements and the ball while running at full speed for 90 minutes was amazing.
This weekend was awesome!! I have a busy Monday full of projects, homework, school, last minute errands, and packing...then it's off to Madrid with the whole group on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday I am going to see my sister Maddie and I am SOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!! She will be in Madrid with her high school (and my fave Spanish teacher ever) so I cannot wait for Wednesday!!! Yeaahh!!!
adios!
