When In Africa...

Ride a Camel, Dance in the Rain, Play Go Fish,  Eat Pot Roast

On Friday, a big group of us from Tech took a trip to Morocco!  That is on the continent of AFRICA people! AHH!!!  The company who took us on the trip is called We Love Spain.  They took great care of us all weekend!  I would've never gone without them.

We didn't get there until late Friday night, so we just stayed the night in the city of Tangier.

The next morning, we went to the place where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea!  The exact spot is marked by this lighthouse.

AND THEN I RODE A CAMEL!

Baby camel...sooo precious.

YAAAAAY!!!!

Getting down was the scary part...

The bus dropped us off at this little cave for a second.  I was surprised when I realized that the cave led to the ocean!
This is the little street by the cave:

Cave-view of the sea:

All of the Tech kids that went posing by the Atlantic!

Arabic graffiti?

Next, we went to a market. It was interesting, to say the least.

Literally hundreds of chickens were hanging up, and there were lots more in crates waiting
their turn to be dinner :(
mmm, yum.

YES PLEASE!! Freaking love the little Moroccan shoes!

Pink toilet paper and a blue toilet...10 points to Moroccos for having the cutest bathroom I have ever seen.

Bus pic of the harbor:

Lunch time! We went to a neat restaurant complete with local cuisine, belly dancers, and a fun band!

Qous Qous!? Koos Koos? Kous Kous? Qooos Quooos?  Whatev, it was good.

DELISH mint tea.

These people were our "entertainment" during lunch...it was definitely interesting!

I got a henna tattoo from a lady at the restaurant :)

My roommate, Chelsea, was the lucky person who got to dress like a Moroccan farmer! ...in the middle of the Moroccan farmer's market!
 Work it Chels.

We went to spice store and they did a cool presentation about all of their spices and teas.

We eventually went back to the hotel.  We tried to make a snack run, but we got a little freaked out because 1) we were the ONLY women on the streets 2) we do not look Moroccan. However, we decided that we value pringles and cokes above our lives, so we persevered :)
We sat in the hotel lobby and played Go Fish and then went to bed.  Isn't that what normal college kids do?

We woke up a little early on Sunday morning and went out to the beach to get some seashells!  Luckily, our hotel was on the beach, so we didn't have to go far.
*This is the Mediterranean, which I thought I had already seen.  But guess what?!  Geography is not my specialty, apparently, because the sea I saw in Barcelona is actually the Balearic Sea.  This is just proof that I am NOT smarter than a 5th grader.

After our early-morning beach trip, we loaded up the buses and drove for an hour or so to the town of Chefchaouen.  Chefchaouen is a teeny village surrounded by mountains.  It was raining when we got there, but we embarked on our 1 1/2 hour walking tour of the city anyways.  We ended up being outside in the rain (not sprinkling rain, RAIN rain) for about 2 1/2 hours, we were all completely drenched.

Luckily, my precious roomie bought us matching hot pink ponchos.  We totally fit in with the locals.

This is great...the ENTIRE city is painted indigo.  The walls, the stairs, the windows, everything.  Apparently mosquitoes can't see indigo so it keeps them away?  Hmmm.

Their clothes were SOAKED but, thankfully, mosquito free :)

We visited a shop that makes and sells rugs and scarves.  They did a little presentation for us and we got to see the giant looms where the rugs are made...and the man using the loom made us all friendship bracelets :)

This is how I looked after 2 hours of traipsing around Africa in gold sparkly Toms shoes (which are precious, but unfortunately not downpour-appropriate attire)  in the rain.

SUCH a cute town.  I wish I could've taken more pictures! (my camera was buried in my purse, which was buried under layers of cardigan, jacket, and poncho)
The rain clouds are covering up all the mountains in the background.

Salad? I'm not sure, but it was delish!

This tasted exactly like pot roast...it was soo good!!

After our 2 1/2 hour outdoor excursion, our feet (and hair, jeans, jackets, etc.) were completely soaked, so I bought this legit pair of wool socks from the cutest street vendor EVER.  His native language was Arabic, but we both practiced our Spanish skills together.  He is my new Moroccan BFF.
mmmm, toasty warm :)

¡Adiós Africa!

My sweet fam sent me a giant package full of love and joy and happiness!  The following things were found in the magical cardboard box:  the John Mayer issue of Rolling Stone, a headband with a giant blue bow attached to it, 2 tubes of pink lemonade lip gloss, little blue slippers, and the Glee soundtrack!! (There was a bunch more stuff in there, I just don't want to make ya'll too jealous :) Do they know me or what?  I freaking love my familay.

I'm currently jamming in my top bunk to Glee.  So much happiness in my life right now.  If you do not watch Glee/own the soundtrack, STOP whatever you are doing right now and go watch it immediately.  Seriously, you're life is not complete until Puck serenades you with Sweet Caroline, trust me.

We (our entire group of about 60ish people) are embarking on a 6-hour bus journey to Lisbon, Portugal on Thursday morning! Apparently Portugal is legit, so I'm excited.

hasta luego,

julia

p.s. our internet has been hacked by evil hackers! Or, more likely, my mooching host family.  Anyways, it took 2 days to upload all of these pictures...yeah, that is blogging dedication (or maybe it's just really lame? whatevs)

Loved the pics of the windows with garments. Want to frame one when you come home! I was so glad the camel didn't spit on you--they are known for that you know! Love you!
